Call for Proposals

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Aloha on Rails Call for Proposals is now open!  Call for Proposals ends on July 15th, 2009.

This conference is an amazing opportunity to bring together the Ruby on Rails community, with the larger Web Developer community, and share our knowledge and experience in beautiful Waikiki, Hawaii. As such, we are building an itinerary that isn’t simply a series of blog posts, but instead is full of wisdom, experience, lessons learned, war stories, discussions, and most importantly, debate.

We think the best presentations create solid debate and energize the attendees to discuss, research, and help them become better and more productive. If you can get a crowd thinking and talking, then we want you!

We are looking for presentations that start a debate and that spark further interest and research. Specific technologies or items of interest would include (but not limited to):

  • Ruby on Rails Software Engineering
  • Deployment
  • Scaling, Optimization and Performance Monitoring and Metrics
  • Implementing advanced data stores such as Amazon SimpleDB, CouchDB, or Tokyo Cabinet
  • Complementary frameworks such as Sinatra or Ramaze
  • Cloud Architectures
  • Fostering a User Community
  • Agile development and team structure and organization
  • Branding and Marketing Your Application
  • Rich User Interfaces
  • Software Engineering Principles
  • Web Science

Talks will be 45 minutes in length.  There will be a Lighting Talks session, however it will be organized at the conference.  No need to submit a proposal for a Lightening Talk, simply attend and sign up.

Your presentation does NOT have to be about Rails but should be about Web Development, so please be creative and we look forward to hearing from you!

Please submit your talk proposal by July 15, 2009.  You will be notified by August 1st, giving you plenty of time to arrange travel. If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact seth@alohaonrails.com

Cheap Flights to Hawaii

Friday, April 17th, 2009

It’s cheaper than you think to visit Hawaii.

We know many of you will be flying in for Aloha on Rails. It turns out that there’s never been a better time to travel to Hawaii, and we’re seeing some of the cheapest travel deals ever.

We always recommend watching Beat of Hawaii, a blog that tracks deals to the Hawaiian islands. However, I found two other lists of cheap flights that should help you out. Be sure to book these flights right away, often times there are limited seats available for these deals.

  1. Frommers.com Airfare Deals and News for the Week of April 17, 2009
  2. Honolulu Area Airfares

We always think that anything under $500 is a good deal, so some of these featured ticket prices (at ~$300!!) are a complete steal.
